College Transition Programme

The transition from primary school to college is a big step in the lives of our tamariki and for their families!

We have developed a programme to ease this time and make it enjoyable. The programme provides multiple opportunities to make connections with others from across the schools and to build a sense of belonging in their new environment.

Transition Days

A series of three days held throughout the year. Students are bused to Bream Bay College where they take part in activities that build connections with each other and Bream Bay College student leaders and staff. Term 2: Transition Day In mixed school groups, Year 6 students take part in a range of activities across different curriculum areas such as Science, Technology, Music, Visual Art. Term 3: Open Day Year 6 students and their whānau are welcomed into the college for school tours, to spend time with the Year 7 teachers and hear from current Year 7 students. This is an opportunity to begin the enrolment process and ask any questions. Term 4: Year 5 Collaboration Day Year 5 students are bused to Bream Bay College and take part in a fun tabloids day run by our Year 9 and 10 Student Leaders. This is an opportunity for them to start to get to know each other and build connections.

Student Conferences

We hold a range of opportunities across the year for students with strengths in particular areas to come together and develop their skill with like-minded peers as well as build connections and challenge themselves. The focus for these vary depending on teacher expertise but some that we have held are: Leadership Workshops Year 5 & 6 Students with demonstrated or potential leadership ability come together and take part in workshops to develop their leadership capabilities. Year 10 Student Leaders from Bream Bay College are supported by teachers to plan and run the workshops. School of Rock Senior Primary students with a demonstrated ability in music and singing come together with Bream Bay College Mentors to collaborate and create bands and learn a song to perform together over a two day event. Pūrakau Project Students with strengths in understanding Te Ao Māori and digital skills come together to create digital retelling of Pūrakau.

Learning Support Connections

Our Learning Support Coordinators work closely together along with our Senco to support students during their transitions between our schools.
